Capability in Motion

Strength that shows up in real life

Capability in Motion brings certified senior personal training into homes and communities across Chicago's North Shore and northern suburbs.

Why we started

Gyms are built for people who already feel confident moving. Most older adults don't need a gym — they need a trained professional in their living room, paying attention to balance, joints, medications and pace. Capability in Motion was founded to bring that level of care to homes and senior communities across Chicago's North Shore and northern suburbs.

The gap we kept seeing was the one that opens after physical therapy ends. Therapy fixes an episode and then stops, often before strength is truly back, and the gains quietly fade over the following months. Meanwhile the family two states away has no idea whether anything is improving. We built the service to close both halves of that gap: keep the work going, and show everyone who cares what is actually happening.

How we work

  • One trainer, consistently. You see the same person, who learns your history and your goals — not whoever is free that week.
  • A measured starting point. The free 45-minute assessment records chair rises, walking, balance holds, fall history and home hazards, so progress is later shown in numbers rather than impressions.
  • Families stay informed. After each session you and any family you invite receive a written summary with photos. Family logins are permission-based, you choose who gets one and what they may see, and you can revoke access at any time.
  • Clinicians stay in the loop. With your permission we read discharge notes, work within stated precautions, and send visit reports to your physician or physical therapist. We continue conditioning work after therapy ends; we do not provide physical therapy.
  • Falls get written down. Every fall and near-miss you tell us about is logged, including the ones that felt too minor to mention, because the pattern is what leads to a fixable cause.
  • Safety first, always. Our trainers and managers hold specialized education in one or more of the following: NASM Senior Fitness Certification, NASM Corrective Exercise Specialization, ACE Alzheimer's Fitness Certification, or ISSA Functional Aging Specialization. All hold current CPR/AED, carry their own liability insurance, and are background-checked.
  • No long-term commitment. No membership fee, no minimum commitment. Unused package sessions are refunded; cancellations follow the session policy and the Illinois service-contract rules.

Who we work with

Older adults recovering from surgery or a hospital stay, anyone who has had a fall or feels unsteady, people living with Parkinson's, post-stroke changes or MS, and clients with memory changes who need consistency and patience. We also work alongside physical therapists, home health teams, physicians, senior living communities and care managers — see our page for clinicians.
